Super Season Opener at Virginia

By Phil Michell

South Australia’s leading venue, Speedway City, will hold its opening event of the 2006/07 season on October 28 with Sprintcar hotlaps and the opening round of the JD Couriers Super Sedan Track Championship taking centre stage. Although the event is still more than a week away the early indications suggest that a top quality line-up of local Super Sedans can be expected and with the likes of Cottrell, Stewart, Neville, Blunden, Ware, Harper and Daniel Miller set to compete the action should be red hot.

Over the past few months series organizer John Dawson has been working closely with Wendy Turner and now that everything has been finalized he is hopeful that this exciting new series will entice a few more local competitors, and perhaps some interstate drivers, to compete at the Virginia venue. “The idea of this series is to get more cars to race at Adelaide and it gives the drivers something to race for. It has been a long time since the Super Sedans have been a regular class at Speedway City and I am sure that they are going to produce some excellent racing” commented John shortly after announcing the details of the Track Championship.

Along with the Super Sedans the Sprintcar hot laps are sure to be entertaining as it will be the last opportunity for the local drivers to sort out their race cars before the opening Sprintcar event of the season, the Australian Sprintcar Masters, on November 4.

In addition to the Sprintcars and Super Sedans the opening meeting of the Speedway City calendar will also feature the AMCA Nationals, Junior Sedans and Street Stocks. Former National Champion Michael Miller has already claimed a feature win this season so there is little doubt that the likes of Brian Chadwick, Matt Crimmins, Luke Raymond and Michael Ffrench will be out to stop his winning run.

The final two racing classes, the Street Stocks and Junior Sedans, should also attract quality fields. The local “Speedway City Street Stock Brigade” will be out in force in an attempt to gain maximum points in their Track Championship while the Juniors always turn up in massive numbers where ever they compete.

Following the October 28 meeting the next event at Speedway City will feature the Australian Sprintcar Masters on November 4.
