Jenkins Super at Murray
Bridge By Phil Michell 30-10-06 The opening round of the 2006/07 Speedcar Super Series was contested at the Murray Bridge Speedway on Saturday night (October 28) with Sydney based Speedcar ace Troy Jenkins narrowly winning a dramatic 30 lap feature race. After being sent to the rear early in the race, after requiring a second push start, fellow Sydneysider Mark Brown charged through the pack to record an impressive second placing with Flagstaff Hill resident Luke Dillon claiming third in the ex Tony Elliott Breka. On the start Jenkins got the jump over Dillon and Morris and the order remained this way until Harley Bishop bought out the first and only caution of the event came out on lap five. It was during this caution that Brown was sent to rear for stopping on the race track in turn three. From this point on the race went green with the battle up front an intense fight between Jenkins and Dillon, with Dillon showing Jenkins his nose on a number of occasions. Behind the leaders Brown was electrifying as he sliced his way through the pack to be right on the tail of Dillon with a handful of laps remaining. Brown eventually made the pass for second with three laps remaining but ran out of laps to challenge Jenkins for an unlikely victory. Following the first three across the line were Western Australians Neville Lance and Dene McAllan, who at one stage was actually challenging Jenkins and Dillon for the lead. Brett Morris (NSW) managed to hold onto sixth ahead of Matt Young (NSW), former South Australian Champion Peter Ghent Jr (Vic), Harley Bishop (Vic) and Queenslander Brad Hilder. The night started off with Brown setting a new 1 lap track record of 13.16 seconds edging out Western Australian Dene McAllan by a mere.02 of a second with local Colin Brooks setting the third quickest time. With the fastest cars starting from the back the heat action was intense as both Brett Morris and Troy Jenkins claimed two victories, with Morris setting a new 10 lap record on both occasions. Unfortunately the opening heat of the night saw a huge accident which saw both Strathalbyn resident Tim Crouch and fellow local Norm Moore roll on the opening lap. As the field exited turn two Crouch spun in front of the field and left Norm Moore with no where to go and as a result Moore made heavy contact with the Crouch’s #7 Stealth. Local favourite Luke Dillon claimed the pole for the 30-lap feature after moving up from position five in the pole shuffle, disposing of Brown, McAllan, Morris and Jenkins.
The
second major event contested on the evening was the opening round of the MJS
Street Stock series with well over 20 cars in attendance. After securing the
feature win on the opening night of competition a fortnight ago Craig
Buchanan and Kellie Wiseman continued on their winning way as they crossed
the line first in the 20 lap feature event. Second across the line was Adam
Tapley with Laon James completing the podium finishers.
Earlier in the night the heat wins went to Adam Tapley, Laon James, Kevin
Lyons and Craig Buchanan. In the support categories the wins were shared equally between three drivers in the Formula 500 ranks with Tom Bowey securing the opening heat before Christopher Brooks droves superbly to claim the second 10 lap preliminary ahead of Track Champion Michael Wise. In the 12 lap decider Wise was able to turn thetables on his rivals as he drove his #8 Hyper Chassis to the feature win ahead of Brooks, Joe Mercorella, Nina Clements and rookie Jarrod Moore. The V8 Dirt Modifieds were also on the program with only a small field in attendance. As a result they only contested a series of dash events with current Western Australian State Champ Cory Read defeating local Murray Bridge resident Darren Baker.
The next event at the
Murray Bridge Speedway will be contested on November 11 with a huge program
that will include the V8 AMCA Nationals, Formula 500’s, Super Sedans, Junior
Sedans, Sidecars and the V6 Sprints |
