SPRINTCAR MASTERS KICKS OFF SA SEASON

By Phil Michell 31-10-06

After several practice sessions around the state in the past month the Sprintcar season gets underway this Saturday night with the running of the 2006 Australian Sprintcar Masters at Speedway City. Currently 48 Sprintcars are nominated to contest this prestigious event which will showcase events for both 372 and 360ci Sprintcars.

Heading the entry list is former Masters Champion Jason Johnson, who will once again pilot the Darren Disbury owned #5 Eagle. Jason has been in outstanding form in the USA this year and he will go into the event full of confidence after capturing over 20 feature wins in the US this year including the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals last weekend at I-30 Speedway.

The exceptional entry list also contains a majority of Australia’s premier Sprintcar drivers and with the likes of Max Dumesny, Garry Brazier, Robbie Farr, Todd Wanless, David Murcott, Danny Reidy, Matthew Reed, Warrenne Ekins and Brooke David also set to compete at the 430 metre clayway you can expect the racing to first class.

With the Australian Sprintcar Masters doubling up as the opening round of the Speedway City Track Championship the local drivers will also be out in force to gain as many points as possible. The local entry will be spearheaded by Phil March, Luke Dillon and Mark Reuter although Dylan Jenkin, Lee Dillon, Craig Vanderstelt, Darryl Wright and Ashley Cook could also provide the interstate invaders with a few headaches.

In addition to the Masters the meeting will also feature a full field of 360ci Sprintcars along with Round 2 of the JD Couriers Super Sedan Track Championship. Presently 15 of South Australia’s best 360ci competitors are entered for their opening event of 2006/07 with competitors traveling from as far away as Renmark and Broken Hill. Current 360ci Track Champion Michael Burford will be amongst the favourites for the feature event although National Champion Jamie Cobby, Owen Pitt, Chris Evans, Jamie Hendry, Darryl Guerin, Mark Caruso, Dennis Burford and Ryan Jones are also expected to be near the front.

An impressive line up of over a dozen cars will be out to stop current points leader Bill Miller in the Super Sedan Track Championship with Daniel Miller, Colin Neville and Kym Cottrell the most likely to challenge the pink Pontiac for overall honors.

A healthy field of Street Stocks will also provide plenty of entertainment on what will be massive program and after last week they will be out to turn the tables on veteran racer Darren Flatman.

The gates will open to the general public at 4:30pm with time trials beginning at 6:00pm. Admission into the venue for the opening Sprintcar event of the season has been set at $25 for Adults, $20 for Concession card holders, Students (12 -15 years) $15 and Children (5 to 12 years) being admitted for $5.
