JONES ON THE FRONT ROW

By Phil Michell 08-11-06

Murray Bridge resident Ryan Jones opened up his 2006/07 Sprintcar season in fine style at the Australian Sprintcar Masters at Speedway City by securing his first ever Sprintcar heat win. Competing in round 1 of the Speedway City 360ci Sprintcar Track Championship Jones was one of the standout performers during the night and was due to start from position two in the 25 lap final before it was cancelled due to the time curfew.

After hot lapping at his home track two weeks prior Ryan went into the event extremely confident having rebuilt his Maxim and freshened up his PM Engines Chevrolet over the winter and it showed as he piloted his #63 Oz Signs Maxim to a sixth placing in the opening heat after starting from the fourth row. But it was during his final heat of the night that the 21 year old displayed his true talent as he managed to steal the heat victory away from Lewiston’s Jamie Hendry on the final corner. “On the final lap I could see that Jamie was struggling and he drifted a little wide in the final turn and I managed to get under him and beat him by less than a car length. That was only my 13th race in a Sprintcar so I am pretty happy but it was a real shame that the feature was cancelled” commented Ryan as he put the car away in their hauler.

With Ryan showing great car speed it was a disappointing that the feature race was postponed and he will now have to wait until December 2 to take his position on the front row of the A-Main. This particular evening will be a busy one for all of the 360ci pilots as they will all contest twin features to make up for last Saturday night. But prior to that event Ryan will be back at Speedway City on November 18 as the 360ci Sprintcar support round 3 of the World Series Sprintcars tournament.
