LOCALS SET TO TAKE ON THE WSS BIG GUNS

By Phil Michell 16-11-06

For the first time in many years the local South Australian race fans will have the chance to witness over 30 South Australian based Sprintcar teams at one event as the locals take on the interstate and overseas invaders this Saturday night (November 18) at Speedway City. The 32 car World Series Sprintcars field includes 16 locally based teams, including Jason Johnson driving the Disbury Family racing entry, and 15 360ci Sprintcars, which will be the main support category for the WSS event.

The strong local line-up includes a number of past champions including former Australian Sprintcar and Speedcar Champion Phil March, former Australian Formula 500 Champions Luke Dillon, Lee Dillon and Jason Loveday and former National Street Stock Champion Steven Lines from Mount Gambier.

It was at this particular event 12 months ago that Phil March stood up to be counted and defeated the WSS travelling teams to record his first WSS victory in several years. This weekend he could once again cause a problem or two for the likes of Johnson, Dumesny and Brazier as he is coming off a competitive run two weeks ago where he drove his Mildura Crane Hire #3 Cool chassis to fifth in the A-Main at the Australian Sprintcar Masters.

But the list of quality drivers doesn’t end there as the local talent also includes former Australian Sprintcar rookie of the year Dylan Jenkin, two time state V6 Sprint Champion Matt Egel, three time SA 360ci State Champion Craig Vanderstelt and multiple State points Champion Mark Reuter.

Adding to the South Australian assault will be Mount Gambier’s Karl Enderl, who is making his return after a lengthy lay off, Glen Sutherland, Wayne Rowett, Ricky Maiolo, Justin Sloan and Ashley Cook, who will be having his first run since competing on the NT Trail in September.

In the 360ci class each and every driver will be out to claim the first feature race victory of the season after the feature two weeks ago was cancelled. Don’t be surprised to see the likes of National Champion Jamie Cobby, Michael Burford, Owen Pitt, Ryan Jones, Jamie Hendry, Chris Evans and Broken Hill’s Darryl Guerin towards the front but don’t discount any of their rivals.

It is also tremendous to see that Saturday nights 360ci field will include three rookies as Steven Caruso makes his second Speedway City appearance while Stephen and Michael Lovegrove will be making their South Australian competition debut.

So make sure you make your way to Speedway City this weekend to cheer on the locals and hopefully one of our domestic stars can use their home track advantage and claim another hometown WSS victory.

The AMCA Nationals will also be on the action packed program.

Gates will open at 4:30pm with hot laps and time trials beginning at 6pm.
