DOMESTIC SPRINTCAR STARS ON SHOW

By Phil Michell 28-11-06

Domestic Sprintcar racing will return to Speedway City this weekend with Round 2 of the Speedway City Track Championship. Both 372ci and 360ci Sprintcars will be in action with a total of 27 Sprintcar competitors set to take on the 430 metre clayway on Saturday night (December 2).

Leading the open Sprintcar entry list is former State Sprintcar Points Champion Mark Reuter, who will be out to claim his first Sprintcar feature win of the year in his immaculate #95 ROH Wheels / Whiteline Transport Maxim. But he will have a tough time as the local field also includes 21 year old rookie Matt Egel (Sage Automation / Forklifts Australia Eagle), Mount Gambier’s Karl Enderl (Clarend Transport Cool), Justin Sloan (Gawler Custom Joinery Eagle) and former Australian F500 Champion Jason Loveday (Moore Engineering Cool). In addition to the South Australian entries the Darwin based duo of Brooke David and Warrenne Ekins will also be in attendance as they attempt to gain as much seat time as possible before the World Series Sprintcars tour hits Speedway City on December 26.

The fourth meeting on the Speedway City calendar will also see the biggest 360ci Sprintcar field of the summer with 20 of the steel block powered race cars entered. After having their opening Track Championship feature cancelled at the Sprintcar Masters each and every driver in the field will hoping to score maximum points in round 2 of the 2006/07 Speedway City 360ci Track Championship.

Current 360ci National Champ Jamie Cobby will go into the event in red hot form after capturing his third feature win of the year last weekend but don’t be surprised to see Darryl Wright, Chris Evans, Chad Ely, Track Champion Michael Burford, Jamie Hendry, Mark Caruso, Owen Pitt and the Broken Hill duo of Darryl Guerin and Josh Ruhs fighting for overall honors.

Another exciting aspect of the night is the number of rookies who will take to the track in the 360ci division including Steve Caruso, Stephen Lovegrove, Michael Lovegrove, Allan Gates and Mildura’s Gary Brennan. This is a great sign for the future of the Sport in this part of the country and it will be interesting to watch them develop as race drivers as the season progresses.

The program will also include Round 3 of the JD Couriers Super Sedan Track Championship, Junior Sedans, Street Stocks, AMCA’s and a Ramp Race to top off what should be a great night’s action. A release on the support events will be posted on www.speedwaycity.com.au shortly.

The gates will open to the general public at 4:30pm with Sprintcar engine starts and hot laps beginning at 5:30pm. The first event of the night will take the green flag at 6:15pm sharp. Admission into the venue for Round 2 of the Speedway City Track Championship has been set at $15 for Adults, $13 for Concession card holders with Children being admitted for $3.

So race fans make sure you get to the track early to get your favourite seat on the grassed mounds or in the grandstands and hold on tight for another action packed night of Sprintcar racing at the “Home of Sprintcar Racing in South Australia”, Speedway City!
